EL PASO, TX – West Texas Food Bank receives a $300 contribution from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.
For more than 20 fulfilling years, West Texas Food Bank’s mission has been the same: to alleviate hunger through community partnerships. Last year, the Food Bank distributed close to 11 million pounds, almost 9 million meals, of food to over 170 nonprofit Partner Agencies, which are essential in providing food throughout such a vast geographic area. These partnerships help serve the West Texas Food Bank’s primary purpose, which is to provide partners with corporate and private donations of food and groceries, who, in turn, distribute that food out to close to 800,000 individuals.
Included in the network of charitable organizations are daycare centers, youth programs, senior centers, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, residential shelters, rehabilitation centers and food pantries. As the clearinghouse and hub of a giant food distribution wheel, the Food Bank is able to give these small-scale organizations bulk-buying power and bulk storage space. In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Federal Emergency Management Administration has entrusted West Texas Food Bank to provide emergency and disaster food assistance throughout West Texas and to provide other regions with emergency assistance as needed.
The Food Bank offers a Weekend backpack program that supplies participating schools with nutritious, kid-friendly, self-serve food designed to fit into a child’s backpack and feed a child over the weekend during the school year. Children identified by school personnel as being at risk of hunger receive approximately two meals worth of food each Friday. There are several groups that work directly with the Food Bank to feed children over the weekend, when they are most at risk of hunger. The cost of a food bag averages about $4.
“We are truly grateful for your gift and your partnership with the Food Bank. Your support of our efforts is an encouragement to us,” said Libby Campbell, Deputy Director of West Texas Food Bank.
