Woodforest Charitable Foundation donates $5,500 to Tri-State Food Bank
ILLINOIS - Woodforest Charitable Foundation recently made three donations to Tri-State Food Bank in support of their Weekend BackPack-Food for Kids Program.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over 31,000 children in the tri-state area live in poverty. A majority of these children rely on free and reduced-priced school lunch during the week, but have no reliable source of food over the weekend. In response to this growing issue, Tri-State Food Bank implemented its Weekend BackPack–Food for Kids Program.
The mission of the Weekend BackPack–Food for Kids Program is to help alleviate child hunger by providing underserved children with nutritious and easy to prepare food at times when other resources are not available. The program provides backpacks filled with food that is child-friendly, shelf-stable and easily consumed. Each backpack contains two breakfasts, two lunches, and two dinners. “Currently, over 800 children in the tri-state receive weekly backpacks over the weekend and school holidays,” said Kim Sievers, Partnership Development, Tri-State Food Bank. “With the help of Woodforest Charitable Foundation we can continue to assist our children during this difficult economic situation.”
Since 1982, the Food Bank’s primary service has been to collect donated food and redistribute it to non-profit feeding organizations. Approximately 14 percent of people in the 33 counties served by the Food Bank live below or at poverty level. Today, Tri-State Food Bank disperses over 4 million pounds each year to 250 feeding programs throughout Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
