AMARILLO, TX – High Plains Food Bank receives a $595 donation from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.

Established in 1982, High Plains Food Bank distributes food through over 180 agencies that work hand in hand to pinpoint need in a 27 county service.  The Food Bank delivered 6.2 million pounds of food in 2011 to the 29 counties served.   It has been a long-standing tradition since inception to deliver shelf-stable and fresh foods to the people that need them.  High Plains Food Bank distributes the food through 165 partner agencies that work to pinpoint need in their communities.  In addition to providing food, they also help people through the sometimes confusing process of applying for food stamps.  This service is provided in order to keep as many people as possible from facing food insecurity in their service area.

The Food Bank educates the public on making healthy inexpensive food choices for their families.  Children and adults are taught about nutrition and why it's important to eat wisely so they can choose healthy completely affordable options to sustain themselves.  This initiative; teaching others to fish, while providing them with the fish they need right now is the mission of High Plains Food Bank.

Kids Cafe is an after-school feeding program of the High Plains Food Bank, which partners with local agencies to provide a free, hot and nutritious meal to children. The Food Bank provides the meal and the partner agency provides the safe place and enrichment activities to nourish these children who might go to bed hungry if these meals and partnerships were not in place. Amarillo Independent School District and High Plains Food Bank have partnered together providing over 100,000 meals each year to children. This partnership impacts many people; including children, volunteers and donors.
It’s important to note, the Kids Cafe does not turn any child away. A child may receive the meal by simply showing up at a site during service time and to eat a homemade meal with their peers and enjoy the time of being a child.
