Atlanta Community Food Bank receives $440 donation from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.
24-April, 2012
ATLANTA, GA – Atlanta Community Food Bank welcomes a $440 gift from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.
Founded in 1979, the Atlanta Community Food Bank currently distributes nearly two million pounds of food and other donated grocery items each month to more than 700 nonprofit partner agencies in 38 counties throughout Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. The Food Bank supports a wide range of people in need, from children to the working poor. Partner agencies include food pantries, community kitchens, childcare centers, night shelters and senior centers. These agencies distribute food and other critical resources to low-income Georgians who suffer from hunger and food insecurity.
The food bank’s mission remains the same-to fight hunger by engaging, educating and empowering the community. What has changed is the unprecedented need for food assistance-unlike anything recorded in the 33 years of Atlanta Community Food Banks assistance.
As of October 2012, Georgia’s unemployment rate of 9% remains considerably above the national average and an estimated 906,000 citizens living in the food bank’s service area are food insecure; meaning they don’t always know where they will find their next meal. Over the past three years, the number of Georgia households receiving food stamps has increased by 62%.
“Today, because of you, more than a dozen Food Bank trucks are on the road picking up donations from food drives, as well as fresh vegetables, bread, dairy and meat from retailers and manufacturers to distribute to our 700 partner nonprofit feeding programs across Atlanta and North Georgia. Thank you for your care and continued support,” said Kimberley Hays de Muga, Senior Development Manager of Atlanta Community Food Bank.
