In support of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County’s new housing neighborhood in Conroe, Woodforest Charitable Foundation has recently pledged $100,000 over the next four years to the non-profit organization.

Here in Montgomery County , many families are living in dangerous, unhealthy housing, and are struggling every day just to get by.  People are often surprised to learn that many of these individuals and families work full time, but still cannot afford minimally decent housing because their income is too low for them to qualify for government assistance in housing loans.

Thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, they are offered hope for a better future through a self-help solution.  In an effort to facilitate decent, affordable homes in partnership with those in need, Habitat for Humanity provides permanent housing solutions to very low-income working families, helping them to become homeowners and break the cycle of poverty.

Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County recently broke ground at the new housing neighborhood located on S. 7th Street called Cedar Creek. Woodforest Charitable Foundation's pledge will provide $25,000 per year for four years to help fuel the progress of this new infrastruture.

Phase One of the new development will include provide infrastructure for 26 homes of the 100 total planned.  Thirteen families have already signed up to contribute their minimum required 350 hours of ‘sweat equity’ once construction begins, which will help to build their homes and the homes of other Partner Families.  The ‘sweat equity’ becomes their down payment, and the Habitat provides a zero interest mortgage which the homeowner repays over 20 years.  Homeowner’s principal payments go back into the local Fund for Humanity and are used to build more homes.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to support Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County in their effort to establish its first community at Cedar Creek in Conroe ,” said Kim Marling, Vice President of Woodforest Charitable Foundation.  “Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to providing decent, affordable homes for those in need. These homes provide a place of stability and pride for families and statistics reflect a direct correlation between this and the increase in education and employment opportunities within these families."

Barbara Smith, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, added, “We are privileged and honored to accept this generous donation by Woodforest Charitable Foundation to help us build this new community for hard working, low-income families in need.  We are thankful for the contributions from wonderful, community-minded organizations such as Woodforest, and we are very happy that they could help us.”

City of Conroe Mayor Web K. Melder , who attended the donation ceremony, said, “It’s a great day for Habitat for Humanity.  I appreciate Woodforest Charitable Foundation’s commitment, and I hope that their involvement and financial support will light a path for others to follow.”
